Did you see the Sharrock Family on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition?

The Sharrock Family of Chattanooga, Tennessee was selected as the latest family to appear on the ABC popular show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition". The Sharrock's son, Patrick, has OI. The show will aired on May 15, 2011.

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a genetic bone disorder. It causes fragile bones that break easily. It also causes problems with breathing, low muscle strength and often hearing loss. Many people who have OI do not grow very tall. OI is sometimes called “brittle bone disease.” A person is born with this disorder and is affected throughout their life time.

There are 8 different types of OI that can be grouped as mild, moderate or severe. The most severe form causes early death and the mildest form causes broken bones with few visible symptoms. Treatments focus on minimizing broken bones and maximizing mobility and general health.

Living with OI can be difficult and painful. In spite of the many challenges, children who have OI grow up to lead productive lives. They attend school, make friends, have careers, raise families and participate in community activities. Adults who have OI can be found in many different careers including business, acting, and medicine.

The Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation provides information and support to people of every age who are affected by OI. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for people affected by OI through research to find treatments and a cure, education, awareness and mutual support.
