Team Sophia’s Spirit is back to take on Baltimore in the Unbreakable Spirit Walk on July 12th, 2018 and we need your help!
This Walk is an important event for our family because it gives us a chance to walk alongside others living a life with Osteogenesis imperfecta. Through this event we are able to raise money for the OI foundation to be used for events that bring our community together, resources to information regarding issues/symptoms pertaining to OI, and funds for further research. The National unbreakable Spirit Walk is held biannually. Last time we walked in Orlando and with help from our family and friends raised over $750! We hope to exceed that goal this year.
So why is this so important to us? As you may know our daughter Sophia was born in 2009 with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a rare condition affecting the collagen in her body causing bones to break easily among other things. The OI foundation was the first place we turned to for information about her condition. Oi is a rare condition which makes funding for research limited. In the last 9 years of Sophia’s life alone we have witnessed new drugs being tested and treatment advancements but there is so much more to be done.
While Sophia may be the only person YOU know that has OI; this is not so rare to my family as we have met so many other people living life with this condition. We take part in this walk not only for our daughter but for all our OI family we have met along the way. We walk for Sophia- the kid who has taught us so much about life and pushed past so many obstacles with a smile on her face. We walk for our MN families scattered across this state who we could not have gotten this far without. We walk for those babies that didn’t survive, every child that has had surgeries to place rods in their long bones or straighten their spines. We walk for the children who, like Sophia, sit in the hospital every 3 months getting infusions that will relieve some of the pain and achiness in their bones in hope that they will stay strong enough to walk, swim, wheel themselves. We walk next to those who can’t but will still cruise along with their wheelchairs, power chairs, walkers, crutches. We walk because this is our life and we are connected to those who walk/wheel alongside us with hopes and dreams for the future.
Sophia is now 9 years old and we will continue to take part in Unbreakable Spirit walks in honor of her. Despite breaking around 70 bones, having around a dozen surgeries and living with daily bone pain Sophia has an amazing light to her. The other day she told me she wishes they would come up with a drug that would make her not break for a year. A Year! This is all she asks for. Wouldn’t it be great to research to the point that we could make that simple wish a reality?! Thank you to all who have supported Sophia’s Spirit in the past and all those who continue to support us into the future. Our family appreciates your support.
Thank you to our 2018 OI Foundation
